Gushou
A digital social platform created for the dragon boat community. Originally named Paddlehub, I encouraged the client at the outset to collaborate on a name less generic, more memorable and — most importantly — more ownable online. The result was Gushou, derived from the Mandarin word for "drummer" — the person responsible for setting the rhythm of the boat and bringing the paddlers together.
The branding itself is inspired by East Asian poster design of the 1960s and 70s, with a self-imposed constraint: no gradients, complex transparencies or other hallmarks of digital design. Every graphic element evokes the flat, layered inks of the era.
A system of radiating circles runs throughout the identity, simultaneously suggesting the soundwaves of the drummer and the repeated impact of paddles hitting the water. These forms can intersect with the wordmark, expand across compositions or reduce down to simple iconography, giving the brand a fluid visual language.
Real calls used by dragon boat drummers become headlines, bringing the language and cadence of the sport directly into the identity. The result is energetic, propulsive and unmistakably connected to its cultural origins, without reducing them to visual shorthand.
